Praising The Goodness Of Your Child

Praise can be a word, an expression on your face, a gesture, or a statement that encourages pride, joy and accomplishment in your child. When you give praise you are giving your child a feeling of positive feedback, which increases their sense of confidence, self-worth and competence. Not bad, huh! When you praise your child, you are pointing out the significance of their abilities, achievements or traits. When your child looks good, tell him so. When your child does anything that pleases you, let him know. And when your child tries hard to do something, even it he doesn’t do it well, always praise the effort involved. In other words, praise your child daily. There are two areas where parents …

Practical Ways to Teach a Child Responsible Behavior

Responsible behavior doesn’t come naturally; it is a learned trait. It is important for parents to teach their children responsible behavior at an early age; a healthy respect for the feelings of others, and a strong sense of right and wrong. Combined with setting a good example and involvement in a young child’s development of social skills, spend quality time with your child and instruct them about proper, responsible behavior. It can go a long way in helping to correct behavior problems that could lead to serious consequences down the road. Everyday experiences are a parent’s best tool when it comes to teaching responsible behavior. Because this type behavior is a learned trait, it can become habit through repetitiveness. Parents …

You wonder whether maybe it’s time to head out, to move beyond the safety of home. Points To Ponder When Selecting Baby Crib

A baby crib is your baby’s first furniture. It is the only item in the world that you are intending to leave your baby unattended for periods of time. That is the more reason to buy only cribs that are safest. The baby crib will also be the place where your child will be spending most of the time. Cribs are expected to be of use until the child is about two to three years old when the baby is prepared to be sleeping in a real bed. Baby crib standards for manufacture have been at work since 1973. Old cribs therefore should already be discarded in favor of the newer designs that meet safety standards. Parents are lavish when …

Playing the Sporting Game

SOFTBALL, SOCCER, BASKETBALL, horseback riding, swimming, hockey, or volleyball—the sport doesn’t matter. The guidelines for parents remain the same. To show support for your child while encouraging and teaching, consider the following: 1. Find out who will be coaching your child. Has the league run background checks on the coaches? Sadly, in these times the person you least expect could be a predator. Trust, but verify. Is the coach an encourager or a screamer? Does he or she focus primarily on winning or on participation and teamwork? Does he let everyone play at least half the game? Does she allow team members to play different positions or are children pigeonholed into one position for the entire season? 2. Make sure …

Playing An Active Role In Your Children’s Homeschooling

Homeschooling is an option that many parents choose when they feel that, for whatever reason, their child will not be getting the best education in a public or private school system. Homeschooling allows for a variety of curriculum and teaching techniques to be applied that suit your child’s particular needs – often that is unlikely to happen in a large classroom setting. One of the benefits – and also one of the difficulties – in homeschooling is the extreme amount of flexibility it affords. In order to homeschool successfully, it is important that you understand, and decide how to handle this conundrum. While there are many benefits to homeschooling, it also requires discipline. In the same way that working from …

Planning the Perfect Baby Shower

One of the most exciting events an expecting mother looks forward to is celebrating her baby shower. Deciding to Throw a Baby Shower Baby showers are often thrown by a friend or family member. Formal tradition dictates that someone other than a family member throws the baby shower, but this certainly does not have to be the case and many modern women go against the grain and welcome any offers from family willing to throw a party on their and baby’s behalf. Preparing Ahead of Time: The First Critical Steps Planning and throwing a shower can be a cumbersome task if you go into in unprepared. It certainly does not have to be however, if you keep a few things …

Your child will need a current physical (often documented on the state’s …

Pieces of Time and Pivotal Moments

Life is comprised of pieces of time sprinkled with pivotal moments. Sometimes these moments have immediate impact. Other times, they are slow to manifest and reveal their importance. But if you listen closely to the soft whispers of life, they will guide you on an unexpected journey filled with beauty, understanding and fulfillment. One such moment occurred for me about eight years ago. On this particular day, I was helping my mom redo her bedroom. We rearranged the furniture, cleaned, polished and changed the curtains and bedding. Then out came the new floral arrangements, potpourri and matching candles. Proudly, we stepped back to admire our work. That’s when Mom decided we needed a little atmosphere and she lit the candles. …

Pay Attention! It’s Your Most Important Job

Anyone can become a parent; there are no tests or interviews to pass. Children can become parents, mentally disabled people – it’s even possible to become a parent while in a coma! When my mother, who is a truly great parent still, became a mom the first time, she was 19 and had very little experience with children. The hospital gave her 1 piece of paper with instructions and sent her on her way. Dolls come with more instructions than that! We sometimes take for granted all the information at our fingertips today that didn’t exist as recently as 30 years ago. When I was a baby, if it wasn’t in Dr. Spock’s book, Mom was on her own. Today, …

Protecting Against Pornography In The Digital Age

It was inevitable with the birth of the Internet that pornography would wind its way into this new digital territory. With all of the value provided by online information and communication technologies, these advancements have nonetheless also become inextricably linked with developments in pornography distribution. Fortunately, new technology brings not only new outlets for pornography, but also new ways to protect against it. There are several sources of unwanted pornography. The web is the most obvious one, but adult content also makes its way on to external drives (floppy, CD-ROM, DVD and flash), into email attachments and on to files that may be shared in a networked environment. The right software can protect you across all of these distribution avenues. …

Promote independence with pocket-money

In seminars I am often asked about pocket-money and whether it should be earned or only given when children behave well. My belief is that children should receive pocket-money as their small share of the family-wealth just as they should share the workload at home. This is not to say that the family income is divided equally between all members. Rather, children are given a realistic sum of money, given their age, needs and ability to deal with money. It makes sense to provide guidelines about spending including letting them know just what they are expected to buy. A child in lower primary school may get enough to purchase some sweets and one or two other items, whereas a child …
